Back in September, Sonic were invited by the BPI and Department of International Trade to send a delegate from DIY to join them on their first ever music mission to South Korea. Heading over as part of a UK delegation that also included a selection of UK artists – as chosen by Sound City – who were set to play sets at both the MU:CON industry showcase and the famous Zandari Festival. South Korea’s biggest musical showcase event – a multi-venue, three-day affair in the vein of The Great Escape – Zandari offers up a host of local talent whilst also giving an international platform to its featured countries. This presented a great opportunity to follow up Reeperbahn with KOCCA and meet local promoters, but it was the bands that provided the most excitement.

As we announced earlier this year, Sonic once again brought together Jägermeister and DIY for a third year of the Jäger Curtain Call programme. In 2017, however, it came with a twist. As opposed to settling down on Shoreditch’s Curtain Road, as we have over the past two years, this year, up-and-coming band Fur were given the opportunity to play at this year’s Bestival, as part of Jägermeister’s mightily impressive brand activation, the Jägerhaus.
Having recorded new offering ‘If You Know That I’m Lonely’ at Tileyard Education Studios back in August, the band then made the journey to Lulworth Cove for this year’s edition of Bestival. Setting up camp in the Jägerhaus on Friday evening, the Jäger Curtain Call takeover also played host to project alumni Kagoule and Bellevue Days, as well as inviting Muncie Girls and Free Money to join in the fun. All in all, it was one hell of an evening filled with great music, brilliant new bands and lots of Jägermeister!
You can read DIY’s full report of the evening right here. Many thanks to Jägermeister’s events team and FRUKT for aiding our involvement in the Jägerhaus.
For the third year running DIY was invited to be a media partner at Reeperbahn, the Hamburg-based conference and showcase festival, whilst also being asked to contribute to the judging of their prestigious Anchor Awards. The conference events offered up an extremely varied and useful insight into the growing global music community, with cross-border partnerships now opening up from USA to China with the help of organisations like South Korea’s KOCCA. A particular highlight was the interview by Greg Parmley of ILMC with Festival Republic’s Melvin Benn, while another came in the form of Liam Gallagher’s surprise appearance at the event. With so many new acts playing across the fest’s three day bill, it was difficult to choose just which artists to catch, but a selection of the most exciting performers were highlighted in DIY’s daily reviews Roll on our next trip in 2019! (Day 1, Day 2Day 3). Roll on our next trip in 2019!.

After two successful years of partnership, Sonic bring together Jägermeister and DIY who are returning with the Jäger Curtain Call programmediy. This year again they will be giving, to a promising band, the opportunity to head into the studio, record a new track and play it live. But this year, the band will have the chance to play at the Jägerhaus at Bestival.
Having previously teamed up with TRAAMS, Kagoule, Bellevue Days and more, this time around it’s Brighton boys FUR who are front and centre. They headed to Tileyard Education Studios last month to record nostalgic track ‘If You Know That I’m Lonely’ – perfect or Bestival setting.
The tracks Happyness and will be premiered later this week at the Jägerhaus at Bestival on Friday as part of a line-up that also features Jäger Curtain Call alumni Kagoule and Bellevue Days, as well as Muncie Girls and Free Money.
Sonic has also put together the DIY x Bestival media partnership for 2017.

For one night only, Slaves brought the party to Brighton Pier for DIY at The Great Escape this year. Everyone’s favourite Tunbridge Wellian hard rockers Slaves took up residency in the Horror Hotel ride – yep, literally inside it – and brought along some mates for the evening, too. It was our first ever Pier Party and not even twelve hours of solid, torrential rain could bring us down!
Kicking off at DIY’s end-of-pier venue Horatio’s with Superfood and Hull boys LIFE, our headliners Slaves took the party outside for the most wet and wild show this side of spring break! Having turned the second level of the pier’s Horror Hotel into a temporary stage, Isaac & Laurie emerged face-painted and bathed in eerie half-light to stomp and rage their way around Brighton’s most ghoulish of attractions.
It was chucking it down, but Slaves have the kind of fervent and adoring fanbase that couldn’t care less – they had a true spectacle to justify their love with and Slaves knew exactly how to throw a more than memorable night. It looked like the sheer power of the duo’s set might literally bring down the pier… read all about it here.
DIY hosted three nights over the weekend – Superfood, LIFE and Slaves on the Thursday, The Magic Gang, Sløtface and co. the following night, with Sorry, The Big Moon and more rounding things up on Saturday – and we managed to take five minutes to shove a mic in our favourite bands’ faces across the evenings! The results are all yours to devour; listen to the new episode and subscribe to the DIY Podcast here.
Read all about it… Universal got together with DIY to give Slaves a very special welcome to Brighton Pier where DIY are presenting their exclusive show as part of a three day music fest at Horatio’s. Sonic continues to be deeply involved in supporting The Great Escape. DIY will be featuring at the convention in CMU Media Insights with an interview with the Publisher and Managing Editor, sharing experieencces in a rapidly changing media market. As has become tradition, the 2017 Festival edition of DIY magazine in association with Ticketweb will be launched at The Great Escape in the delegate pack and at all venues, and we will be supporting Dutch Impact, the music export agency, in its campaign to bring Dutch artists to the international audience.
